☀️NETFLIX begins exploring new Ad Tier tech options outside of MICROSOFT

Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY March 14, 2023.

Where since he didn’t get his moment at the OSCARS on Sunday night… let’s give him one here before we start today.

PLUS: This was quite the #funfact from a look at A24 in the NY Times after their big night - after 95 years of every studio pulling every OSCAR campaign tactic in the book… A24 was the first studio to win the Top 6 OSCAR awards in a single year.

AND: Just a little snapshot into the exposure Social Media can give a song - the MILEY CIRUS song “Flowers” has been used in over 600k YT Shorts, tallying up 40 Million views. No word how much ya know… 💰 that puts in MILEY’s pocket, but hey it’s always nice to be popular. 🤷‍♂️

ALSO: In case there was any doubt as to the popularity of SVB stories over the weekend 👇.

INFLATION: Was still +6% YoY for February, and +0.4% on the month… which matched Wall Street expectations. Food and Housing costs are still the main issues - and Street money thinks the Fed will still boost interest rates 0.25 this month as a result - despite all the SVB stuff (and their wildest dreams at having 0.00 March hike #nicetry).

This CNBC chart lays out the situation pretty well visually - inflation is still just not cooling off to a significant degree, which is Job #1 for the Fed. (You’re at a 6, we need you more like a 2… thanks 🤏).

So if you’re trying to time a new mortgage - perhaps consider taking advantage of the momentary SVB-induced dip.

TOMORROW: We’ll see how the DELTA Wifi treats me on the way back to NYC today… so tomorrow might be a bit late if I have similar err, luck as I did on the way out to the West Coast.

Assuming they let flights leave in the rain in LA, which I’m putting at 60/40. So if you get an email from me asking if it’s cool to “crash for the night” later, that’s what that’s about.

IN TODAY’S EDITION:

  • META cuts almost as many employees as they did in November (more if you include those they’ll no longer hire).

  • BUZZFEED’s Q4 numbers were probably about as bad as you’d think and Q1… yeah not so much. A look at the latest.

  • How the OSCARS numbers comp against the previous 10+ years, and other major TV events.

  • NETFLIX reportedly begins due diligence on the future of its Ad Tech infrastructure now that the Ad Tier is fully up and running.

  • The search for making money on YOUTUBE Shorts by the people ya know, uh, making the content continues with new reports - echoing many current talent trends in HOLLYWOOD.

  • WBD goes live with new streaming service in FRANCE

  • VICE valuation takes another hit with new bid, and much more.
