Today is the latest in our weeklong series for paid subscribers about creativity. Yesterday, we covered how Hollywood can get unstuck.

As we debate creativity — or lack thereof — in Hollywood, off in Cannes, we’re witnessing the debuts of two who went it alone in very different ways, sans industry: Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner. In both instances, the creative juices clearly flowed freely, but will that be to their benefit?

Cannes critical bandwagons are not to be trusted on questions of how films will fare outside of a very rarified bubble — particularly in the case of Horizon, which will seek out a very different and far broader audience. But the question of how far can Creativity, Hollywood Style bend and rearrange itself is very much on le menu sur le Croisette. Have these two icons run amok? Should an artist be allowed to run amok in a creative field?
