☀️‘Moana 2’ Bets Pay Big in Prediction Mkts 🤑
APPLE TV+ gets Anya Taylor-Joy series / HULU sets its Murdaugh lead / Job Board Tuesday!
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY, December 3, 2024.
Where . . . anyone wanna give me $200 so I can play this golf course in Southwest Ireland that many Americans apparently fly in to play? (Gotta love the off-season rate).
Richard, whaddaya say we hold The Ankler Open here — the NETFLIX folks clearly did it all wrong by going to Vegas for theirs.
PLUS: Here are your Gotham Awards winners — A Different Man, who knew?
The NYFCC winners list is here this morning.
THEN: Ya gotta admire how fast AI learned from the companies it’s ripping off harvesting — OPENAI is now hiring ad execs from other tech companies as it explores adding an advertising business to increase revenues, according to the FT. #Innovation
HUH: The 💰 check that DOTDASH MEREDITH will be getting from OPENAI each year for its content is . . . $16M. Or at least that’s the guaranteed money — there is an additional “variable” payment as well.
DDM made over $1.2B of revenue in the first 9 months of 2024.
AND: A rec for folks interested in the digital news space to check out Peter Kafka’s latest Channels pod with the 404 MEDIA folks, and how they’ve built it into a going concern since launching it last year. #goodlisten
HMM: FIDELITY marked up the value of its X investment by 32% in October, but some things to note here:
The FIDELITY fund making these headlines initially invested just uh . . . $20M in TWITTER/X.
The investment has still lost 72% of its value since October 2022.
This markup happened before the election, and while no specifics were given by FIDELITY for the reasoning — Elon creating closer ties between X and his xAI business arm may be helping here.
NO WAY: Dinesh D’Souza admitted that the “methodology” he used in his 2000 Mules “documentary” about 2020 election fraud was uh . . . flawed. Can’t wait for the FOX NEWS report today.
YAH: Reed Hastings told Scott Galloway on his Prof G pod that he is applying the same NETFLIX culture ethos to his Utah skiing business #KeeperTest— though I wonder if they use a different, more thematic term for “sunshining” there. 🤔
OH: I got you an investment banking conference as an early Christmas present 🎁 — WELLS FARGO has its TMT Summit today:
WBD’s JB Perrette takes the stage for a chat at 5:15 p.m. ET (link here to listen).
CINEMARK’s CFO Melissa Thomas is at 2 p.m. ET if you wanna hear just how great the 🎞️ weekend was (link here to listen).
AND: The year-ending SNL lineup:
ALSO: Here are your Top 10 Most Streamed Songs on YT in 2024, led by a song from this year’s Super Bowl halftime performer . . . which I’ll put a $20 ESPN BET on right now that it’s a song that well over half of that event’s audience will be hearing for the first time. Have fun, censors!
THOUGH: Note the . . . completely different U.S. Top 10 list for songs on YT Shorts (except for the top song, which is on both lists).
Welcome to the music business in 2024, everyone — I’m sure all of these artists are high on your playlists as well.
