☀️'Minecraft' Restores Hollywood Swagger To Start Q2
Final Four 🏀 numbers grow / AMAZON expands Day's purview / TRIBECA sets fest opener
Evenin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on SUNDAY, April 6, 2025.
Where let’s open today with a #freeidea for the CINEMACON 2026 planning committee — maybe have it the week after the big movie hits theaters? Just a thought.
Gonna make the leap that the vibes inside CAESARS next year would be far different after the Super Mario Bros. 2 debut than before.
NEW NEWS!:
The Tribeca Festival will open this year with the HBO Billy Joel doc — Billy Joel: And So It Goes — on June 4 at the BEACON THEATER (with the big guy in attendance as well). TRIBECA CEO Jane Rosenthal just announced this during one of The Ankler’s Business of Entertainment panels at NAB. Not for nothin’ — but I’m just saying my calendar is open that night.
WELL: Glad we were all sitting down when news came in that a TIKTOK deal being in hand by the Apr. 5 deadline was . . . not happening. See you all in mid-June at the new deadline.
BTW: Anyone else been enjoying The Americas on NBC Sunday nights? Nice to have wide-appeal, family-friendly series like that on broadcast TV on a Sunday night (that’s not a competition series of some sort).
FINALLY: Kudos to UCONN on the big win today over SOUTH CAROLINA, staying true to the ‘tournament of blowouts’ theme that ran throughout. Ratings breakdowns for the Final Four below.
THE WAKEUP at NAB
Come join me, Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs tomorrow at the NAB convention at 11:30 a.m. in Vegas (space W217-W218) for this dive into all things CANDLE MEDIA, the state of TV buying, the YOUTUBE business, the future of studios, theme parks and more.
COMING WEDNESDAY: The WWE with Nick & Paul at 10:30 a.m.
Paul won’t tell me which wrestling move he’s going to do on me if I fail his WrestleMania history quiz . . . but he said it’s gonna be pretty sweet, so stay tuned for that.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLL
Kudos to the 31% Minecraft optimists! But not the box office tracking community . . . who to my recollection haven’t missed this much since Barbie, WB’s last huge hit.
