☀️Mid-Summer Studio Movie Biz Scorecard: The 🏆 Goes to…
NEON gets FERRARI for Christmas / Summer TV ratings woes / CHARTER sets new blow to RSN biz
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY July 11, 2023.
Where the town really doesn’t seem to like seeing boldfaced names related to the strike enjoying themselves in Europe this Summer huh?
Fran was partying with Kim in ITALY as part of Fran’s work as a brand ambassador for DOLCE AND GABBANA (can I get in on that 🙋♂️?), and is due back in LA today according to a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson via The Ankler’s Strikegeist newsletter, and it doesn’t sound like she would have been at the negotiating table this past weekend if she was in town… but yeah. Optics go both ways in a strike, especially on the eve of 160k+ people potentially being out of work.
But hey… at least she didn’t also throw a party with a subscription-based digital newsletter while she was there 🤷♂️ (although would an exploratory phone call have hurt? 😩. I mean, I was busy in Jersey… but still).
AND: In a shock to few, AI seems to be a sticking point as SAG-AMPTP negotiations enter their final 48 hours. Highly recommend checking out ESG’s most recent read here at The Ankler on AI, and some likelihoods that await different sectors of the business (and how soon).
👀 STAT: The Broadcast TV Primetime audience in NIELSEN Live+7day data is -13% this Summer so far, going from 2.1 million to 1.85 Million, according to data cited by Cynopsis. Yeah that can’t be helping the Q2 numbers.
PLUS: MADONNA’s US tour will be officially rescheduled (dates TBA) due to her sudden hospitalization last month. The European tour will begin as planned in October.
ALSO: This year’s Global Citizen Concert in Central Park on Sept 23 will feature RHCP, Ms. Lauryn Hill and Megan Thee Stallion.
IN TODAY’S EDITION:
Here on the eve of the 2nd half of the Summer Movie season with MI: 7 hitting theaters… what better time to give out the crown for who won the first half! And what’s ahead for each.
Plus NEON gets Ferrari… CHARTER gives non-sports fans a price break… NY Times stops running 2 different Sports journalism divisions and more.
OH: A thanks to the PAR folks for the invite to check out MI:7 last night - leave the 🤔 plot intricacies (and broad story theme similarities to LOTR 🤷♂️) at the door, and enjoy a helluva ride that I would’ve actually been very satisfied paying the $20 NYC movie ticket price to see.
The $291 Million budget is definitely up there on the screen. See you at the $700 Million BO mark PARAMOUNT… and also just a small shout out to Esai Morales, who really needs to be near the top of more casting lists.
