☀️META has 1st Annual Revenue Loss Ever, but beats Wall Street fears in Q4
BRILLSTEIN up for sale? / NETFLIX's unique Super Bowl push / SIRIUSXM to lose Subs in 2023, hits all 2022 metrics
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on THURSDAY February 2, 2023.
Where “Efficiencies” is officially the new buzzword of 2023.
PARAMOUNT kicked things off using it in their PAR+SHO announcement… SPOTIFY used it as their new 2023 mantra on their Earnings Call Tuesday… DRAFT KINGS used it in their 140 employee layoff news yesterday… and META used the word so much on their Q4 Earnings Call yesterday it put a quick end to my drinking game.
Note: the analysis below was done this morning 🥴.
AND: Good luck to TICKETMASTER on the BEYONCE tour sales 😳. Pre-register here to be “verified” if you’d like to roll the dice on… well they haven’t set an actual on-sale date yet.
PLUS: GenX nostalgia alert - PAR+ has ordered a 3-part LOLLAPALOOZA doc “Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza” (part owner of the fest C3 is a partner in the project).
AND: Leslie Odom will return to BROADWAY later this Summer in “Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch”, a revival of the Ossie Davis play - no theater home announced yet.
THEN: Look at the SUPER BOWL Ads for NETFLIX… ish:
MICHELOB ULTRA is sharing their SUPER BOWL Ad with NETFLIX. MICH ULTRA’s “Caddyshack”-themed Ad will contain a QR code on-screen for people to access the first episode of NETFLIX’s new PGA series “Full Swing” early (a la “F1: Drive to Survive”).
GENERAL MOTORS and NETFLIX are doing a Big Game Ad starring Will Ferrell to promote their partnership to feature GM Electric Vehicles in NETFLIX series (UTA brokered this deal).
ALSO: “Fast X”, “The Flash”, “Ant-Man” and “Transformers” will all be seen during the big game next Sunday as well.
TOPLINE NOTES FROM TODAY’S EDITION:
A #MediaNerd🤓 2fer: SIRIUSXM business rode a turbulent 2022 very well… but paints a mixed 2023 outlook, a look at the numbers and what’s looming in Q4.
A look inside the META numbers - Wall Street was very happy… but mainly because it wasn’t as bad as they (and META themselves) had feared, not because it was an objectively good Q4.
AMAZON buys R-rated Farrelly comedy.
NEW LINE picks up another film from the “Barbarian” team.
BRILLSTEIN sales rumors mount.
And a lot more with HBO, NETFLIX, SXSW, HULU, SONY PICTURES, BUSTLE MEDIA GROUP and… the State of NY on a busy day below.
