Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Where I gotta make this snappy today — Zaz, Lachlan and I are judging the secret pancake making contest between Zuck and Altman this morning at the ALLEN & CO. Sun Valley conference. 🔥
I hear the winner gets the other guy’s lead AI engineer 🤫 . . . and Lachlan wants to have a meeting to go over the rules one more time before things get started 🙄 (bro, it’s pancakes . . . just go with the one that looks most like Mickey Mouse — but don’t tell Iger we’re doing this, mmkay?).
AH: Today is the big HBO MAX re-rebrand day. Sorry, DISCOVERY shows — although I’m pretty sure your old DISCO+ app still works 🤷♂️ (CNN, we’ll get ya on the next one buddy).
THEN: Add this to the list of ways life under the Trump administration in America is getting greater — a federal appeals court struck down the FTC’s “click to cancel” rule that was set to go into effect next week, making it easier for users to cancel things like streaming services. So — thankfully the patented, AMAZON PRIME 6-step #UserFirst cancellation process lives on!
PLUS: META paid $3.5B for just under a 3% stake in RAYBAN maker (and world’s largest eyewear company) ESSILORLUXATTICA — which really shows just how much you’re getting ripped off by sunglass prices when the eyewear company’s market value is now . . . $136B.
AH: OPENAI and MICROSOFT are taking a page out of the 1980s APPLE playbook — they’re funding a new program to sell AI subscriptions to school administrators, and creating programs to teach teachers how to incorporate it into their work. Hopefully, CHATGPT isn’t too harsh on grading 3rd graders’ creative writing assignments.
Like any good
dealerupstanding American company, they’ll also make pitches to students directly with AI subscription discounts around exam time on the academic calendar. I hear the working title for the promotion marketing is “Just a Taste,” but we’ll see where OPENAI ends up on that one.But let’s just hope Elon doesn’t make a side deal for GROK to grade 7th grade history papers.
THANKS!: To the folks at OMAHA PRODUCTIONS for the invite to a special screening of Quarterbacks’ new season in NYC last night — the production quality is still tops in the genre and pretty fun to see the on-field action on a big screen (NFL FILMS is a production partner). There are definitely 3 great, varied QB narratives to follow this season — Kirk Cousins doesn’t disappoint . . . neither does Joe Burrow’s stylist.
