☀️INSIDIOUS gives SONY 2nd Summer hit, as JOY RIDE stumbles
TIKTOK MUSIC is born / Jen Garner joins DEADPOOL 3 / HBO cancels 2 more
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY July 10, 2023.
Where it’s nice when Hollywood executives can point to more egregious 2022 exec pay packages and say “See? We told you - We’re a bargain!”
PLUS: This NY Times read on the causes and successes of hotel union workers (some specifically in LA) was a #goodread.
As was this reminder from an empirical study on the history of unions in 2018, showing that union workers typically earned 10% to 20% more than non-union workers… and that a lot of those union $$ gains came out of business profits (a good portion of which often just goes to shareholders) and… executive pay.
BUT HEY: At least all of those guys can still afford TELLURIDE this September, as it’s apparently now cheaper to go to VENICE than to COLORADO to watch movies, according to IndieWire 🤯.
CONGRATS: To 25-year-old Allisen Corpuz who won the LPGA US Open at Pebble Beach this weekend, her first LPGA title.
AND: TWITTER is threatening legal action against META over THREADS - because when you totally have a case, threatening a lawsuit is what you do.
Um Elon? 🙋♂️ Lawyers for SNAP are on line 1 (#Fleets), CLUBHOUSE on line 2 (#Spaces), and SUBSTACK on line 3 (#Revue). They all sound very threatening.
BTW: You can’t delete your THREADS account without also deleting your INSTA account. And ya’ll thought Hollywood was the biggest dumpster fire this Summer… 🙄.
💯: THREADS hit 100 Million accounts created last night… or just under 10% of total daily INSTAGRAM users globally (using Statista numbers). Remember EU folks can’t use it due to privacy violations.
ALSO 👀: Remember META VERIFIED is still out there in the ether at $12 a month (even though we haven’t really heard a thing about it in the 6 months or so since it launched). Gotta think that’s part of the THREADS grand scheme here as well. A blue check… is only as blue as the green 💵 behind it.
OH: Sarah Silverman is leading what I’m sure will be the first of many lawsuits against META and OPEN AI, for not being compensated by them for using her copyrighted material to “train” their bots. Let the fun begin here… and always pay attention to how AI execs deflect when asked for specifics about what their AI bots ‘learn’ from 👀.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLL Results:
Well technically Jim Caviezel’s Sound of Freedom won it all this weekend… but an “opening 6 days” is really an odd thing to account for - so we’ll give a ⭐️ to the Insidious folks too.
IN TODAY’S EDITION:
Quiet a weekend at the box office… and Indy 5 was the least interesting thing about it. A lot to dive into in this week’s Box Office Break.
The NBA Cup tournament is now officially a thing… but it doesn’t have a TV deal yet - a look at the most likely TV/Streaming homes for it (and lord help it if it doesn’t have a Streaming-only option).
TIKTOK MUSIC launches.. DIS+ sets APAC Originals plan… RAINE launches a new investment fund… DIAMOND writes another check, and much more.
FINALLY… HMM 🤔: Either Iger has made the rides a lot more time efficient at DISNEY this year… or crowd size at the DIS theme parks may be facing some issues. The WSJ has a look.
