Evenin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on SUNDAY, April 28, 2024.
Where, yes — a kudos to L.A. for still having two teams in the NBA Playoffs (for at least one more day), but NYC definitely had the spotlight today as Jalen Brunson set a new KNICKS playoff scoring record at 47 points, and the opportunity to send the SIXERS back down the Turnpike for the season on Tuesday night. Don’t forget to bring Saquon with you 😉.
ALSO: If you saw The Onion was sold last week and then . . . kinda couldn’t really tell wtf was going on with who was buying it 🙋♂️ — Axios’ Dan Primack did a great job walking through the players and how it happened here, although its future pivoting to a significant subscription model is still TBA.
AH: 12.1 Million people tuned in to watch folks call names of 🏈 athletes from a stage every few minutes on Thursday night, aka the NFL Draft (that’s across ABC, ESPN / Deportes and NFL NETWORK), +6% from last year. At least more Americans still show up when Hollywood kinda does the same thing at The Oscars, and throws in some jokes and songs.
But yes, an event whose premise has not changed since the event was held in a hotel ballroom each year decades ago, with just a bunch of executives and landline phones, drew more than 275,000 people in Detroit on Thursday night to stand outside for hours and watch the magic of uh, an extremely well-paid job fair.
#Funfact: the Draft was first aired on ESPN back in 1980.
ALSO: This may be a look you’ll see on your TVs this fall (which reportedly absorbs at least 10% of the impact of a head hit):
WAKEUP BOX-OFFICE POLL
Okay, technically Challengers opened $10k over $15M so . . . great job fellow $15M to $17Mers!
