☀️INDY Opens to FLASH Numbers in July 4th Wash Out
MAX's DUNE series gets new leads / TRON 3 gets add'l cast / Cable Bundle melt hits ESPN talent
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY July 3, 2023.
Where only 3 films cracked $10 Million over July 4th weekend… and 2 of them barely did. Last year had 5 films solidly over $10 Million, but if it’s any consolation… 2019 also only had 3 too, although 2018 had 4 strongly above $10 Mil.
And as Richard, Elaine and I recounted in The Ankler Pod on Friday…. some July 4th’s of yore like 2013 had 8 films over $10 Million.
SO MR. CRUISE: The Movie of the Summer title is still yours for the grabbing once again - if you have the goods… and of course since SAG-AFTRA kindly extended their strike deadline to Wed July 12 - you can also coincidentally now fully finish your MI:7 world press tour.
AND: Nothing like having a Town Square for true, real public discourse that …limits the amount of things you can hear in the square each day.
New ‘temporary’ TWITTER POST VIEW LIMITS per day:
Paid ‘Blue Check’ members: 6k (bumping up to 8k soon)
Existing Freeloaders: 600 (bumping up to 800)
New Freeloaders: 300 (bumping up to 400)
No word if those post view counts include the increasing amount of Ads they’ll likely also be stuffing in your feed… or what “temporary” means.
JUST AN IDEA 🙋♂️: If the July movie stars are now so gung-ho about promoting overall moviegoing in the month (and each other’s movies)… why not do a series of (live-streamed?) appearances at movie theaters throughout July after showings, whereby you do select paired meet & greets and/or interviews with each other about your respective movies?
Um, and not just in LA and NY mmmkay?
Nothing like encouraging Americans to get out to the theaters by showing up to ordinary movie showings yourselves all month long… together.
Take that, Streaming!
TO NOTE: The AMPTP set a new deal with Canadian actors on Friday.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE CREW:
Kudos to da Bears! That is, the bearish- the 28% of you who took “under $65 Million” on Indiana Jones this weekend 👏.
IN TODAY’S EDITION:
This will be a July 4th weekend to forget at the Box Office… except in the accounting departments - a look inside all the numbers in my weekly breakdown.
Some Cable TV Biz context to keep in mind around ESPN’s shocking Friday talent firing purge.
Dune the TV show and Tron the sequel get more casting news.
APPLE TV+ axes another very recent series, and more.
A ⛳️👏: For this one on Friday when a transformer (not the PAR variety) blew on the WB lot (I was gonna go with ‘WBD Last-Minute Bid to Hit Q2 Revenue Goals on June 30: Insurance Payments’ - but I know when I’ve been bested).
Wakeup PROGRAMMING NOTE: This is it for me this week! Well. Save for anything drastic, so don’t you you changing CEOs on me…
BUT: I’ll mostly be hanging in NYC I think (I may try to escape up the Valley for a day or something), so if any folks want to meet up for a coffee or a cold beer or something just drop me a note on Linked-In or email (seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com).
