☀️ H'wood Purge: PAR+ axes more SHO Series orders from the slate
NBCU dives into FAST / AMAZON+BLUM set Kevin Bacon for Series / Reservoir Dogs ending on FX ON HULU
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect here on LINKED-IN if ya like) and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on FRIDAY June 30, 2023.
Where let’s have our Friday morning coffee ☕️… holiday weekend style in Wine Country up at Fergie’s house in Solvang.
For just $3.7 Million (or about 12 memberships to the LACC), we could be sipping “coffee” (🥂) poolside right now with “Glamorous” views, because just as Richard always quotes from this song - “If you ain’t got no money take your broke ass home.” Err, just not to this one obviously.
THE WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLL RESULTS
Lotta folks going middle of the road this weekend…
REST IN PEACE: Goes out to acting legend Alan Arkin, who died at 89-years-old this week at his home in Carlsbad, CA.
PLUS: ACTIVISION BLIZZARD CEO Bobby Kotick noted in his testimony in the FTC trial regarding the MICROSOFT acquisition deal that he’s not a fan of ACTIVISION games being included in MICROSOFT’s gaming subscription service… citing what’s happening in HOLLYWOOD right now due to its shift to Streaming as one of his main rationales 😬.
OH: The FTC’s wide-reaching anti-trust lawsuit against AMAZON regarding their suspect policies toward third party sellers should come this Summer, according to Bloomberg.
AND JUST A 🤯: If you think HOLLYWOOD ageism is bad - apparently the Logan’s Run age in CHINA is 35-years-old, where many companies replace 35+ employees with younger graduates willing to work for lower wages and more overtime, according to the NY Times (there are no age-discrimination protections in the country).
AH RIGHT! As of this sending… SAG-AFTRA is still due to either make a deal or 160k actors go on strike at midnight tonight. But it certainly feels like “cool college professor term paper due date rules” will come into play here to extend that at some point today?
MOVIE STARS PROMOTE THE MOVIES! While Nicole Kidman will always be the pioneer #AMCWeMakeMoviesBetter… the Barbie folks are jumping on the Cruise coattails (always a smart move) in encouraging people to see all the new movies in July!
In June’s defense… their movies largely had CGI leads, and one who is… well, let’s just say not active on social media.
ALSO: Apparently TWITTER is now not letting you see tweets unless you’re logged into the site with an account. That Musk grip keeps getting tigher doesn’t it?
IN TODAY’S EDITION:
NETFLIX gives The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo a director.
PAR+ purges more from the slate, both already-ordered and in development.
Kevin Bacon joins BLUMOHOUSE TV project
Insider outsources staff to the PHILIPPINES.
Tyler Perry sets his 2nd movie at AMAZON in 2 days… although husbands are hiding a lot of secrets in both.
The weekend preview of everything new to watch and stream, some good new podcast episode listens, and much more.
NEW POD, WHO DIS?
Richard, Elaine and I got together to do this week’s Ankler Podcast early! I think Richard had to get to the beach today to start working on his base tan for the July 4th LA pool parties.
We discuss the ramifications that SAG’s reported asks for greater residuals on Streaming hits could have on the larger ecosystem… as well as what it portends for the future of an industry that can’t even agree on “What’s a Streaming hit?”
PLUS: We have some fun picking the best the July 4th of yore in 10 year intervals, from 2013, 2003, 1993, and 1983, as I pop quiz Richard on his PG-13 history - and while Porky’s may not hold up so well in 2023, its early 80’s box office is pretty astounding.
