☀️Have you heard of TROLL? Meet NETFLIX's new massive movie hit
BUZZFEED cutting 12% of staff / Taylor Kitsch stars in NETFLIX Western / Bakish hints SHO rollup into PAR+ isn't far off
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY December 7, 2022.
Where it’s time to pour one out 🍻 for 2 NYC institutions that pre-dated my arrival here as a young man full of dreams… and hair (as one Wakeup reader who kindly gave me a job back then likely remembers).
“STOMP” announced it’ll be closing in the East Village on Jan 8 after a 29 year run.
Carolines Comedy Club will be closing its Times Square location on New Years Eve after 30 years, citing the new ‘jack up the rent’ reality pervasive in NYC.
Damn, does anyone know if MOOMBA is still open?? 😬
AND: Sounds like “Avatar 2” more than delivers on the visual spectacle… that is judging from the junketeer / press reactions at the London premiere yesterday. So, the OSCARS just caught a break (not that there was likely much doubt on that part).
ALSO: Here are your Critics Choice Awards TV nominees if that’s of interest, and congratulations to Adam Sandler for his Comedy Movie Star of the Year PEOPLE’S CHOICE Award for his… dramatic role in “Hustle”.
IF IT’S ANY CONSOLATION: Layoffs are starting to hit Wall Street banks as well, with MORGAN STANLEY laying off 1600 people, and layoffs looming at GOLDMAN as well. And if you can still afford your mortgage - good on ya, as 25% of 1200 Millenials (age: 26-41) in a new Real Estate poll said they’re currently living with their parents.
PLUS: Remember, today marks the 81st anniversary of the attack on PEARL HARBOR.
GOOD POD LISTEN: Don’t worry - I’m not on it. But if, like me, you also don’t know that much about the intricacies of the DISNEY theme park business (or as much as you’d like to)… or are an avid DISNEY Theme Park goer and want to know just why you’re paying so much more after the pandemic - the latest Bulwark Goes to Hollwyood pod with Robbie Whelan from the WSJ who covers the DIS parks biz closely had a lot of great insight into how Chapek’s Theme Park biz changes likely played a large role in his ousting as well.
GOOD WBD READ: Alex Sherman at CNBC reported on the shift to the ‘generate cash flow ASAP’ strategy that Zaz has given his WBD division leaders (#MaloneEndorsed), and why it’s so imperative. And yes, that means some more layoffs probably coming before end of month. It also puts in perspective why “Batgirl” blowback was not his number one concern this Summer once he finally got a handle on the numbers that AT&T left him.
