Stuber sets new UA pic / NETFLIX Tops CA Film Tax Credits / CBS sets PAC-12 deal
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LINKEDIN here if ya like or email me at seanmcnultynyc@gmail.com), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
Where if you had any doubt as to where the money would be coming from to pay college players — rest assured, mom and dad . . . it’s you.
Yes, as the college sports world enters the era of (officially) paying “student” athletes — more schools with major sports programs are adding things like $300 a year “athletics auxiliary fees” to every student’s tuition bill, and no, that’s not going toward upgrading your kid’s college gym equipment.
So make sure little Johnny Dylan and Jenny Madison attend a lot of sporting events this fall to amortize your costs. Well. On top of the ticket costs for games, which will still have to be paid, too.
AND: Yeah, things may not be so great when they get out of school now either — AI is already flooding job postings for white collar jobs (which ironically AI will likely be eliminating anyway!).
Proving once again, kids — it’s typically all about who ya know. Keep that in mind with any WFH aspirations . . . I mean, take it from a guy who, ok fine, works from home (but who worked in an office for 25 years!).
BUT: Maybe just encourage them to learn jobs that AI won’t replace? Gotta love this quote from HVAC manufacturer CARRIER GLOBAL’s CEO in a new NY Times look at the dire state of the U.S. manufacturing / “blue collar” job market workforce: “For every 20 job postings that we have, there is one qualified applicant right now.”
So yeah, good luck keeping all of those AI data centers cool, big tech!
AH: ESPN set Shane Gillis to host the ESPYs next month on ABC, July 16. Yeah, that tracks.
😱: Millennial tour alert — Brandy and Monica will be heading out on the road later this year, starting in October.
YAH: Apparently someone at APPLE wasn’t too happy with the new “back to school” 7-minute short film starring Please Don’t Destroy member Martin Herlihy . . . as it was pulled after one day online on APPLE’s YT page.
HMM: Apparently #BigTech eyesight isn’t what it used to be . . . as AMAZON PV has joined NETFLIX in rolling out an interface/UX update where images & tiles are now much larger — although it’s keepin’ it real with the sidebar menu navigation vs. moving it up to the top like NETFLIX.
OH: NYC folks — the boats in our ferry system will likely be wrapped in logos in the not-too-distant future. Can’t wait to catch the White Lotus FYC ferry to Wall Street.
THEN: It may be time for a Deep Impact reboot! (Armageddon being a movie that just can’t be improved upon, of course). This piece on a new powerful observatory in Chile that can see far more asteroids in space (and any that could be coming Earth’s way) is pretty cool.
FINALLY: NETFLIX is bringing out all the corporate firepower to hype its Taylor vs. Serrano fight night on July 11 at MSG — in the week leading up (starting July 5), NETFLIX’s Paris Theater will be showing a lineup of huge boxing movies on the big screen in NYC (Raging Bull, Creed, When We Were Kings, Million Dollar Baby, Girlfight and more). Tix and schedule here for Knockout: A Cinematic Celebration of the Sweet Science.
The Egyptian Theater in L.A. will also be showing pics July 7 -10, because you know how jealous the Egyptian gets. 🙄
