☀️DISNEY rumored for another huge College Sports TV deal
Crime's hot day in streaming TV sales / SONY's INDIA stunner / Globes audience rebound
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY January 9, 2024.
Where a congrats goes out to the U OF MICHIGAN on winning the College Football Championship last night over U OF WASHINGTON. Who said stealing play calls doesn’t pay?
Although given the almost $9 Million 💰 that its respective conferences (BIG 10 and now defunct PAC-12) each got from the NCAA for having teams in these CFP games… I’m gonna argue there aren’t a lot of losers here.
OH WAIT RIGHT 🤦♂️: The players, who get paid nothing.
PLUS: NIKE and Tiger Woods are dunzo after 27 years. His $20 million-a-year deal contract finished up at the end of 2023.
AND: Anyone wanna give me $3500 on Feb. 2? What? No not for an APPLE VISION PRO headset - I just wanna go on a really nice beach vacation after Q4 earnings season 😎. I mean… think of the newsletter content alone.
ALSO: Kudos to the 11% of you who were GOLDEN GLOBES audience bulls out there… 9.4 Million was the viewership number, no word yet on:
What the NFL lead-in # was.
How numbers broke down by half-hour through the 3-hour show.
But returning to Sunday certainly was a big help, vs. last year’s random Tuesday night on NBC last year and 6.3 Million viewers.
Although it’s still only about 50% of what the show used to do pre-Covid… it certainly gives Jay Penske a bit of momentum to find a home next year.
CBS has an exclusive first-position negotiating window from its deal this year.
EMMYS, good luck with your MLK Monday night next week on FOX, up against an NFL playoff game on ABC.
THEN: WBD sold 22 Million copies of Hogwart’s Legacy in 2023 in 10 months. Game unit price seems to vary in a GOOGLE search… but at say $50 a unit, that’s about $1.1 Billion in revenue (at retail).
OH: The U.S. office vacancy rate has matched that of early 1980s recession, at 19.6% 🤯. 5 of the Top 10 most-vacant cities are in the South (Houston, Dallas, Austin, Tampa and Jacksonville, per MOODY’S), which has a lot to do with the overbuilding there that caused that 1980s glut in the first place, and still exists to this day according to the WSJ.
A THANKS: To PARAMOUNT PICS for the invite to check out the Mean Girls premiere last night in NYC - a fun time at the movies, with sharp laughs throughout.
AND: Senior Millennials, enjoy feeling old - it’s more fun if you just lean into it… or at least that’s what I’m thinking Lindsay Lohan would have told me if we were seated together.
📺 THE TV SET
AMAZON orders crime series, uh, Criminal
Well, I do love a name that cuts to the chase. It’s co-created by Ed Brubaker (Westworld) and Sean Phillips….
