☀️Dealmaking Return! UNI-Chris Rock Deal Caps Week 1 Flurry
A24 gets Paris Hilton TV series rights / NEON buys Ilana Glazer pic / Another NHL pro team goes back to Local TV
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect here on LINKED-IN if ya like) and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on FRIDAY Oct. 6, 2023.
Where let’s have our Friday morning coffee ☕️ (no doubt with a side slice 🍕) at BARSTOOL founder Dave Portnoy’s new Nantucket Harbor digs, as the Hamptons just wasn’t Dave’s speed apparently.
But hey - these views ain’t bad either, even if the weather… not so much (I know it’s New England, but couldn’t wait for a sunny day to take the pics?). Although, are they $42 million good? 🤔
Either way — it’s always nice to set a real estate sale price record on an island already full of money.
PLUS: Fellow Jersey & NYC folks - MONTCLAIR Film Festival tix go on sale today here.
Movies include May December, The Holdovers, Eileen, Zone of Interest, Stamped from the Beginning… plus a Scorsese conversation with Colbert, and an American Symphony screening with Jon Batiste.
Festivities begin Oct. 20.
GOOD/BAD: The U.S. added almost 2X more jobs than expected in September (336k)… which likely means the Fed will be even more resolute in maintaining its high Interest rate tactics for the foreseeable future 😩. The U.S. unemployment rate is now at 3.8%.
AND: The Eras Tour has now already taken in $100 million globally in pre-sales.
NICE 💰: Celebrity/”creator” talent who are ‘featured voices’ of META’s AI chatbot rollout (Snoop, D’Ameilo, Tom Brady) are getting about $4 mil to $5 mil for a two-year license deal (and about six hours of work).
ALSO: Suits is showing the power of having eight seasons of TV episodes… setting a NIELSEN record for the most weeks as the #1 show, now at 12 weeks (the chart goes back to 2020).
THEN: If your idea of a good time in the holiday season is pretending you’re in Squid Game 🤔, NETFLIX has you covered with an ‘immersive experience’ at Television City starting Dec. 6 (complete with food from a Korean night market).
Just uh, try and keep the IGs and TIKTOKs a little tasteful given the wealth and class issues inherent in the show’s themes maybe?
BACK TO WORK: SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are back at the table today to round out week one of negotiations in the strike.
A REST IN PEACE: To NFL legend, occasional actor, and 80s beer pitchman Dick Butkus, who died at the age of 80 in Malibu, CA - this Bloomberg obituary gave some great context on his life.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLL RESULTS:
The experts are split! I’m going with the 40% on this one.
AND: Welcome to the world “B/R Sports Add-On”! MAX subs - enjoy the start of the MLB Playoffs divisional round tomorrow and the NHL season next week, free of charge.
MAX is building quite an app of brands in that navigation bar… just waiting for that “News” tab to turn to “CNN” perhaps once we’re done with the “beta” phase 👀.
Also interesting to note that CBS and NBC don’t have dedicated hubs on PAR+ and PEACOCK respectively (SHOWTIME does have a hub on PAR+ though).
