☀️Case Study: UFC-WWE TV 💰 vs. DtoC Streaming 💰
NFL Sunday Ticket price goes up / Kim Kardashian doing TV at FX / HFPA boosts voting body 3X
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on TUESDAY April 11, 2023.
Where… anybody wanna buy a Mac? According to Bloomberg, sales of Macintosh personal computers were -40% in Q1 🤯, the worst Q1 drop since the beginning of 2000 (all PC sales were -29% in Q1)… and given that “keep the computer” is likely not in any tech severance packages - this certainly tracks.
PLUS: The HFPA has 3X’d the GOLDEN GLOBES voting body size, adding 215 new International voters to next year’s edition to make for 310 total… wherever the show’s gonna air/stream. And here is the list. Just kidding, they didn’t reveal the names or outlets for the new additions.
But they said that the new voting body is now more diverse:
42% White
25% Latinx
14% Asian
10% Black
9% Middle Eastern
MY APOLOGIES: To the U OF MINN for mixing up my furry arboreal friends yesterday - they are the Golden Gophers, not the Beavers. Plus a my bad to Joe Alwyn, for the extra l that I put in his name yesterday.
CONGRATS: To Hilary Swank, on the birth of her new son and daughter.
IN TODAY’S EDITION:
A relatively quiet day of TV & Movie deal news - are ya’ll on Spring Break? At least Kim Kardashian came through for me with a scripted TV role (a line I never anticipated writing).
Although - YOUTUBE announced that NFL Sunday Ticket (& RedZone) are actually getting more expensive this Fall than they were at DIRECTV. Well at least they’re on brand for the 2023 state of the Streaming business.
So - I took some time to dive into some numbers about how much UFC & WWE are currently making in US rights deals (and compared to their total Rights income), plus if the notion of combining the 2 into a DtoC service made any $$ sense. Enjoy at your leisure.
