☀️LGF's August to Forget, as Box Office Gains Continue
WBTV makes moves for more 'Ted Lasso' / NBA files for dismissal vs. WBD / Cruise pic casts up at WB
Evenin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on SUNDAY, August 25, 2024.
Where a Wakeup cheer goes out to Florida . . . without any hint of snark attached to it! I knew the day would arrive eventually — congrats Florida on winning the Little League World Series today over Taiwan in extra innings.
AND: Another shout out goes to London’s MC Grammar, a struggling rapper, turned teacher, turned successful rapper . . . by essentially applying the Schoolhouse Rock principals to rap and English class vs. civics. Pretty fun story here in the NYT.
ALSO: The latest VERIZON deal — buy a year of NFL+ ($50), and get a year of NETFLIX bougie tier (Premium for free (a $276 value). VERIZON, you ok, bro?
AND: DNC final night numbers continued to top the RNC:
DNC got 26.2M (across 15 networks) to the RNC’s 25.4M (across 14 networks), thus making for a 4-for-4 DNC audience size win.
It’s also above 2020’s 24.6M for DNC night 4, but again the 2016 DNC topped this year with 29.8M. Ah . . . the world of linear TV in 2016.
As per usual, about 72% of the audience (18.8M) was 55+, with the final night skewing just a little bit younger:
18-34s showed up with their biggest numbers yet, at 1.4M.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLL
Well, my fellow 39% (the 2nd tranche) Blink Twice experts and I took the title this weekend . . . barely. The bears were stalking outside the gates.
📽 THE SILVER SCREEN
Well folks, one weekend left in the summer . . . and I can guarantee you no one thought the end of summer numbers would be anywhere near where they stand today — details below.
However, the latest entries failed to gain much traction as the transition back to school has begun for students from college to kindergarten . . . and as LIONSGATE has a month that definitely won’t be highlighted on the earnings call. Thankfully it has a rather robust fall lined up to try and turn the narrative — see what’s ahead.
But let’s note that we do have 3 movies doing more than $10M here on the weekend before Labor Day — nothing to sneeze at. Here are the numbers to know 👇.
