☀️APPLE's Magical $200M 'Killers' Math: The Breakdown
CAA's Maha Dakhil fallout continues / AMAZON takes TNF hit with competition / SAG & AMPTP getting back in a room
Good evening/mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on SUNDAY Oct. 22, 2023.
Where I’ll take the GIANTS victory over the COMMANDERS today as a positive sign, to go with SAG and the AMPTP coming back to the table this week 🤞.
I mean even on the West Coast - Sean McVay couldn’t be more excited.
AND: Adele is extending her Vegas residency dates into June next year. It was set to conclude next month, but she chose to extend as it has been “a truly extraordinary restorative experience that I’ll never forget.” Her accountant had a similar statement.
PLUS: Meryl Streep & husband Don Gummer have been separated for six years, according to a new statement obtained by Page Six.
WAKEUP BOX OFFICE RESULTS:
The 43% took the Flower Moon crown… as the bears suffer a rare setback.
ALSO: CAA’s Maha Dakhil was removed from CAA’s internal “Agency Board” and “for the time being” from her position as co-chief of CAA’s motion picture department, according to an email sent to staff from Lourd, Huvane and Lovett.
Claire Atkinson first broke the news and has details here for The Ankler on the angry meetings that transpired over the past few days (plus the problematic “cousin”) and new details surrounding the whole situation:
🪧 STRIKE FORCE
SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP negotiations are back on Tue! Be there at SAG-AFTRA Plaza (bring your own sack lunch).
Per my usual “watch the motivation” approach to monitoring these negotiations… your Q3 Earnings Calendar to note:
THIS THU (OCT. 26):
COMCAST/NBCU, although Wall Street will mainly be evaluating broadband & mobile revenue (and CapEx spend), plus NBCU theme parks revenue helps a lot here.
Note: Donna Langley is not traditionally on this call.
AMAZON: 😂
THU NOV. 2 👀: This is the first big day to note really, giving about a 1.5 week window for SAG negotiations to produce something.
PARAMOUNT: Even though Bakish hasn’t been among those in the room with SAG, this is obviously a company with a lot on the line as the owner of the biggest broadcast TV network.
FOX: I mean, its worth noting… but scripted live TV isn’t a huge part of its business anymore.
APPLE: 😂
WED NOV. 8 👀 🧐: The big day to watch
WBD, DISNEY (and ENDEAVOR): Given the AMPTP has come back to table comparatively soon… I would be very surprised if there isn’t a deal by this date, roughly 2 weeks away.
AND: Just a small shout out to my friend (and I’m pretty sure occasional Wakeup reader?) Joel Stein - if you enjoyed his columns in Time way back when there were magazines, he’s now doing a version of them on Substack, basically for free (I did my best to explain business models to him when I was in LA).
Fewer celebrity things (well ok none - it’s a Substack that even he only half tells people about), but still a fun weekly entertaining read for anyone inclined.
