Mornin! This is Sean McNulty and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on MONDAY October 10, 2022.

Where a film originally intended for streaming is turning into the Box Office hit of the Fall, nearing $100 Million in global box office in just 2 weeks… and the GIANTS are 4-1 for the first time since - well, there was no Streaming. #2009

Ok yes your 401k is still in the basement and NY METS fans may feel differently this morning… but can’t help but feel a little optimism starting the week.

PLUS: Nikki Finke died this weekend at the age of 68 in FL after a prolonged illness, and gotta love this line from the obit piece on the site she created: “Finke sometimes butted heads with PMC founder and chairman Penske, and she left Deadline in 2013.” Sure that’s one way to put it.

IN TODAY’S EDITION:

  • “Finding Nemo” director sets SEARCHLIGHT live-action pic

  • CBS’s “Fire Country” debuts to impressive #s

  • Kaley Cuoco gets co-star at PEACOCK

  • Nicholas Hoult in the mix for next pic from “Northman” director

AND: We’re now 2 weeks out from the start of Q3 Earnings season, where INDIA’s importance will only keep increasing.

So I sat down for a podcast conversation at the APOS conference with Sameer Nair - head of one of INDIA’s leading TV & Movie production outfits, APPLAUSE ENTERTAINMENT. Sameer was also the former head of Rupert Murdoch’s STAR TV business (nee HOTSTAR) in INDIA during its formative years in the 2000s.

Sameer’s had a front row seat to the evolution of the INDIA TV market from the 90s to today, and produces series with all the major services (DISNEY+HOTSTAR, AMAZON PRIME, ZEE, NETFLIX and more), and also has a film that’s created quite a bit of buzz at TIFF and BUSAN this Fall.

Things you’ll learn:

  • Understand just how new the ‘premium TV’ market is to the region, and NETFLIX’s role in essentially ‘making the market’

  • The key role that US TV Crime Procedurals play in developing the market

  • The budgets and financial costs for TV Series production in a market with #ARPU’s of $1 to $2 a subscriber (vs. the $11 to $13+ developed markets like the US and EUROPE have)

  • The immense change on INDIA’s horizon in 2023… which could & will very likely kick the whole market into overdrive next year, and much more.
