☀️ A24, AMAZON Increase Q2 Buying Spree
AMAZON's big NBA check / Cannes market projects heat up / NETFLIX gets Ronda Rousey pic
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect here on LINKED-IN if ya like) and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on FRIDAY, May 3, 2024.
Where NYC now has two playoff-winning teams! The KNICKS 🏀 joined the RANGERS 🥅 in winning a first-round playoff series last night — and yes my apologies to L.A. who’s having a tougher go this year, but any dual franchise winning excitement at MSG needs to be celebrated.
As for my Philly reader contingent — hey, it was a great series, even if your extra 2,000 local fans last night didn’t quite pay off. But after our NFL games this past season . . . a little payback is just the natural order of things.
PLUS: Over 40k books for sale on AMAZON have now used AI to create audiobook versions (they are marked as being created by AI). #jobloss
THEN: AMAZON is putting all other flywheels to shame, by now recommending audiobooks to AUDIBLE subscribers based on their PRIME VIDEO viewing — and no, there is no way to opt-out of this sharing between apps . . . so if you share an account with your spouse, perhaps get ready for a lot of book recommendations that are not quite hitting the mark.
OKAY: NETFLIX . . . you good, bud? First Cobra Kai’s final season gets . . . 3 different parts, and now Emily In Paris season 4 is getting the “halves” treatment — pt. 1 on August 15 and pt. 2 on Sept. 12 (both falling in Q3).
AND: Here are your final SNL hosts for the 2023-24 season:
PLUS: My apologies for leaving Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted off of my round up of NETFLIX’s summer comedy efforts yesterday — then again, I heard “the movie business is over,” so it shouldn’t be a big deal.
OH: As the week rounds out here, just shining a little light on some folks doing good in town, as the INEVITABLE FOUNDATION awarded its latest round of grants to help disabled folks — this round centered on disabled women and nonbinary writers.
WAKEUP BOX-OFFICE POLL RESULTS
Ok I’m going with The Fall Guy optimists . . . but not the super $40M+ bulls (although I’m secretly rooting for you — come on summer movies!!).
