Once the lights go up, the crowd filters out of the Dolby Theatre and onto the parties, the reviews come in and little by little the glow of “Hollywood’s biggest night” inevitably turns to “What the hell was that?”

I liked the show just fine, as I said. But still.

The odd little moments, the odd big moments, the quiet snubs and the double meanings — as we finally close the door on the 2023 Oscar race, here are some of the biggest unresolved questions that will live on with us alongside memories of this race forever.

1. What the hell happened at the entrance?

The show was delayed by people entering down the Highland path having to abandon their cars blocks from the theater and make their way through a gauntlet of pro-Palestine protestors screaming in their faces, pressing in on them with — according to many — the police nowhere in sight. The commotion ultimately led to the show beginning an unthinkable five minutes late.

The LAPD only had, of course, forever to prepare for this and had about one zillion officers deployed elsewhere on the ceremony grounds, but not at the place where there was an actual, threatening situation.

Also: Why do protestors feel like yelling straight into the faces of people walking into an awards show does anything for their cause?
