It’s another day when it’s very hard to write about anything but the big elephant in the bathtub. I’ve had also sorts of other things waiting on the runway for their chance to soar for a week now, but IP Bob’s Retirement, James Murdoch’s house of cards, CAA’s sell-off…Are all going to have to wait to fight another day as we do yet another Mostly Harvey issue.
That fact that a grandee of Hollywood is being called to account for his behavior is still sinking in. It’s such a stunning reversal of all laws of nature that Hollywood still doesn’t quite know how to process it. And not just a grandee, but The Iconic Grandee: the inventor of the modern For Your Consideration deathmarch Himself.
Around town, there are still plenty of people rolling their eyes, saying, what’s the big deal, he’ll be back.
As recently as Friday, Vulture had this quote from an anonymous filmmaker:
He pauses before adding: “So the head of a studio made some improper advances? To me, it’s much ado about nothing. It seemed like he never crossed the rape line. Not one of those people said he slipped something in their drink or penetrated them or forced them to do a sexual act against their will. None of that’s there.”
“He asked for a few massages? Waaah! Welcome to Hollywood!”
And today Fox Business has this headline:
Yeah, maybe, but don’t count on it.
We live in a country defined by our twin gods of liability exposure and deniability. For a company to bring on, to keep on, someone who has been publicly exposed as a predator, puts a wrecking ball through both those deities. Anyone who put money in a Weinstein project now knows that the next woman he treats this way has a pretty good chance of taking the whole funding package home with her with a ribbon tied around it.
As of this year, from Uber to LA Reid to Cinefamily, we’ve now worked out a pretty good script for these things whereby once the charges make it to the general public outcry level the miscreant is pushed out the door as rapidly as can be managed before he put the investors at any more risk.
And we’re early in this era, the victims fight back era, and thus far, there is no precedent or path for the accused to stage a comeback. None.
For Grabberhands himself, when they are talking about erasing your name from the company you founded and expunged from the credits, when your own lawyer is trying to put as much daylight between you and herself, that’s a pretty good sign that no one is thinking about ways to slide you back into the corner office after 30 days at Promises.
