Evenin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on SUNDAY, July 14, 2024.

Where a Presidential assassination attempt, the passing of three notable boldfaced names, an exorbitant wedding of Indian corporate royalty — with a Jonas, two Kardashians and a Cena present — a combination of Hollywood and British royalty in Tom Cruise and Kate Middleton both hitting center court at Wimbledon . . . and another stunner at the box office made for quite a weekend.

Meanwhile, I spent 3 hours of my life on Saturday sitting on the tarmac at JFK waiting for my plane to take off for the West Coast.

Been waiting a long time to break this one out 🙌. Via Giphy

AND: A kudos to the next generation of tennis, in Barbora Krejčíková and Carlos Alcaraz taking Wimbledon this year (and pretty sweet $3.45M checks home with them).

HUZZAH!: To Eddie Murphy and Paige Butcher, who made things street legal in a Caribbean wedding ceremony. The two got engaged in 2018, and have two children together.

ALSO: The Daily Show has canceled its shows from the RNC in Milwaukee this week, and will do them from NYC as usual — sans Monday / tomorrow night, which now won’t have a new edition.

PLUS: Kudos to SPAIN for winning its record-setting 4th European ⚽️championship today 2-1. Tough break, ENGLAND.

REST IN PEACE: As mentioned, sadly a trio of boldfaced names said farewell this weekend . . .

  • Shannen Doherty died at the age of 53, after a several-year battle with cancer.

  • Richard Simmons died at the age of 76, of natural causes.

  • Dr. Ruth Westheimer died at the age of 96, in her home of New York City. A lot in this obit that I had no idea about — quite a life before the things we mostly know her for in the U.S.

WAKEUP BOX OFFICE POLL

As expected, the bears definitely won out on Fly Me to the Moon . . .

Okay, who had Longlegs in their 2024 Summer Movie Box Office Preview pieces 8 week ago? Exhibit #1,792 supporting movie business axiom #1: The only way you’ll know whether a movie is a hit . . . is to just make them. It remains as true today in 2024 as it ever was.

Also gotta love two July theatrical surprises in as many years, and audiences also getting a pretty diverse marquee — this weekend has a horror pic, period rom-com, family films on both sides of the coin, a sci-fi action pic, buddy action pic and well, that western is still out there too just in case. Now, if someone in this town can remember how to make a comedy — we’ll be getting places!

But uh, what do we have for August? Cuz we’re gonna need somethin’ . . . here are all the numbers to know and the pertinent comps as well.
