☀️Inside NETFLIX's shocking...ly quiet Q1, but a strike? Eh, we're fine.
Halle & Angelina team up at WB / NETFLIX's new global Film hit / Aziz sets new pic at LIONSGATE
Mornin! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if ya like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news to know on WEDNESDAY April 19, 2023.
Where first - Elaine Low and I did another mid-week The Ankler podcast last night, diving into at the big picture items from the NETFLIX “earnings call”, and breaking down some trend lines from the Q1 report. Perfect for an LA morning drive… or London tube ride home. NYC lives on its own schedule.
I of course dive further into all the NETFLIX global region numbers, growth trends, and much more below here in my #medianerd🤓 analysis in THE MEDIA BIZ section down below.
Pod Clarification: NETFLIX Games are indeed for subscribers only… my apologies for not being totally up to speed on that in the pod.
BUT: You do need to download games separately (and individually) in mobile app stores (and then re-log in with your NETFLIX creds) to play… outside of the NETFLIX app, and frankly when I searched the app this morning, I still didn’t see a Games tab anywhere to be found.
No data was released on NETFLIX Games spending, usage, or downloads for Q1.
AND: AMAZON PRIME is rolling out a ‘Dialogue Boost’ feature which will raise the volume on low speaking/mumbly sections of shows & movies, and lower other parts of the audio mix (something I’m sure the sound professionals of Hollywood are thrilled to hear).
Now if it could only help you also find that damn clicker too… I think we’d have something 👴.
ALSO: Killers of the Flower Moon will be 3hr and 26min. Showing at theaters… 3 times a day this October.
APRIL LAYOFF WATCH:
Bloomberg is putting the DISNEY layoffs as next week… although given it’s already Wednesday and the layoffs are scheduled for ‘later in April’… yeah that sounds about right here. Although bit of color - the cuts to the Entertainment group look to be 15%.
Vox reports that Zuck’s first round of (new) layoffs will begin this week at around 4,000 out of the 10,000 he’s planning at META.
AND: As you’ve seen already, FOX has settled their DOMINION lawsuit for $787 Million, but hey - good news for the nation’s train system… as I’m guessing the AMTRAK Acela out of Wilmington, DE had record business last night.
FOX is still facing a $2.7 Billion lawsuit by the SMARTMATIC election tech company, and for the record the NY Times rounded up the other cases of active litigation against the company.
FOX had about $4 Billion worth of cash on hand at the end of 2022, and a net income of $321 Million in their last reported quarter (Q4 ‘22). Their Q1 Earnings call date has not yet been set.
PLUS: Here is your TRIBECA FILMS 2023 list, with 93 World Premieres taking place from June 7 to 18 in NYC. 68% of the films in competition are directed by women.
Includes docus on Biz Markie, Stan Lee, and Dan Rather (directed by Frank Marshall), and pics directed by David Duchovny, Chelsea Peretti, Michael Shannon, John Slattery.
Tickets, passes and such available here.
OH: DISNEY PIXAR’s Elemental will close CANNES this year on May 27.
