Spacey. Piven. Ratner. Apres le Deluge

The big question now is no longer “who’s next?”  That question seems to be answering itself.  Everyone. Everyone will be next. Lots of little to medium-sized to now somewhat big names are coming out. And the standards of what is needed for a takedown are falling by the hour. The very biggest names unfortunately take time. Given how well people with all the resources in the world in this business are able to cover up their misdeeds – the armies of courtiers trailing behind, each writing checks and making things right – these stories are very hard to tell, even with the mobs roaming the streets. It’s one thing for Andy Dick’s or James Toback’s victims to come forward, but even after the explosion, a titan of Hollywood is still a fearsome thing, with a lot of carrots and sticks at their disposal. We’re living in this strange in-between moment, when no

WEINSTEIN FOLLIES DAY 19: LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS AS USUAL

From today’s edition of The Ankler: Blazing in triple-digit heat just before Halloween, it feels as though the gods of showbiz are trying to get our attention. Too bad for them, we’ve got air-conditioning; CFC’s be damned. As earthquakes go, Harvey was The Big One, bringing down a couple skyscrapers (Harvey and Roy Price), a few smaller condo complexes, and revealing the crumbling foundation of the entire enterprise, The American Way of disasters, however, is a three step process: Horror and Grieving Declarations that this Changes Everything Change nothing, except the subject, at the first opportunity. Hollywood may not have invented this playbook, but with our poobahs have perfected it.  Hollywood’s ratio of Claims-That-This-Is-Unacceptable to Total-Inaction greater than in the entertainment industry rivals even Washington’s. The thing about Harvey-quake is: things will change now.  Victims have found a voice; their mass silence is not coming back. And now, every time one speaks

RED HARVEST

Well this is getting messy isn’t it? It should’ve been so simple: take accused offender. Line him up against a wall.  Change the subject – fast.  How hard is that? But instead, by the time this whirlwind settles down, there’s not going to be any Hollywood left for anyone to distance themself from. I’ve covered the ground here pretty thoroughly in the last couple all Harvey Grabberhands special editions, but at this point I’m not sure where this ends. The narrative has now advanced far beyond Harvey deep into enablers and abettors territory. Which is fine, but once you get into that – if you’re going to start taking down anyone who has witnessed horrible behavior and said nothing, should we just start by banning anyone who has ever worked on a movie set? With a TV show runner? At a PR firm? Hollywood was founded on the principle that

THE HARV WAY

It’s another day when it’s very hard to write about anything but the big elephant in the bathtub.  I’ve had also sorts of other things waiting on the runway for their chance to soar for a week now, but IP Bob’s Retirement, James Murdoch’s house of cards,  CAA’s sell-off…Are all going to have to wait to fight another day as we do yet another Mostly Harvey issue. That fact that a grandee of Hollywood is being called to account for his behavior is still sinking in. It’s such a stunning reversal of all laws of nature that Hollywood still doesn’t quite know how to process it.  And not just a grandee, but The Iconic Grandee: the inventor of the modern For Your Consideration deathmarch Himself. Around town, there are still plenty of people rolling their eyes, saying, what’s the big deal,  he’ll be back. As recently as Friday, Vulture had this quote

REGARDING HARVEY

The fact that Hollywood has been waiting for this dossier to come crashing out literally for, as the headline says, decades, that it all but exploded two years ago before going back into its shell, didn’t make the site of the hammer falling on Harvey Grabberhands any less dramatic. In fact, as damaging as the NYT piece was, Harvey’s statement was even worse and would be enough to get a person run out of most counties all by itself, without even knowing what he’s accused of. It’s a document that graduate seminars will study for decades to come as a textbook example of Hollywood sociopathy in full regalia. The story is unfolding, and will keep unfolding but here’s some early takeaways: The Weinstein revelations are part of a story that’s been playing out all year. To date, 2017’s fallen include: LA Reid, Dr. Luke, Harry Knowles, a blogger, a programmer, maybe still the nation’s major indie
