BAILEYGATE: TIME FOR A TIME OUT FOR THE ACADEMY

We of course still don’t know what the charges are against John Bailey, let alone how serious, solid or verifiable they are.

That said, it’s hard to see in this day and age, once your company has put it out there that they are looking into harassment allegations, how you walk away from multiple accusations. That genie no longer fits back in any bottle.

As for AMPAS… what’s next: will we find the museum is being built on an Indian burial ground?

The timing, of course, raises eyebrows. That this comes out right as the Oscar dust settles is interesting. For a company to suddenly leak that it is investigating multiple charges of harassment against its own President, is unusual. Did all these accusations just come in the door, all together, just now after Oscars?

Also interesting, given that, that David Rubin one of the candidates for the Presidency against John Bailey, has been tasked with leading the investigation.  Of course, we’re all friends here so who could suspect anything amiss, but interesting all the same.

If after all the debacles AMPAS has blundered through in the past couple years, if they, in the immediate aftermath of Harvey, brought on a new leader with troubles of his own, then truly, it’s time for the Academy to announce that it’s taking a decade or so off to go get some rest and find itself;  hopefully on a nice quiet island in the Caribbean. Maybe the Academy can take a permanent berth on Geffen’s yacht, devoting itself to Instagramming A-List guests, sea turtles and cerviches fresh from the ship’s brig.

Honestly if right at this moment, the film industry’s most august ceremonial body appointed a new President who had a history of problems of his own…then I think we have to say it’s time for the military to step in and declare martial law; to send every executive in Hollywood back to their native lands on the Upper East Side or wherever they came from and instal some admirals and air force generals as the provisional governments of AMPAS and the studios until things can get sorted out properly.

The Academy’s lack of leadership and vision on all these questions is getting too glaring to ignore. After stepping forward for about five minutes to expel the world historically gruesome serial predator in their ranks, the Academy has not followed up with any clarity about where if anywhere short of Weinstein-level horrors the line falls.  They made an announcement that effectively turned them into a policing organization of member’s behavior,  and then walked right out the door and away from every responsibility that implied.

Ex-cons, accused murderers, Roman Polanski and Kevin Spacey remain members in good standing and let’s not forget the body handed an award to Kobe Bryant himself just a few weeks ago.
